Stuttgart 1–1 Atlético Madrid: Ten Men, a Valuable Point and Reasons for Calm

Atlético Madrid's 1-1 draw away to Stuttgart was a night to appreciate the value of a response. After a difficult first half, Diego Simeone's side equalised through Julián Álvarez and then protected the result following Morten Hjulmand's dismissal. There are things to improve, certainly, but there are also good reasons to feel calm about the character this team showed in Germany.

A Difficult Start Deserves an Honest Assessment

Stuttgart had the better of the opening half and took the lead through Jamie Leweling. Atlético struggled to establish themselves, with Jan Oblak helping to keep the game within reach. That part of the performance needs work: a team with Atlético's ambitions should be able to find its feet earlier.

Still, a difficult opening does not have to define an entire European away performance. The encouraging part was that Atlético gave themselves a way back into the contest.

Julián Gives Atlético Something to Build On

Álvarez's equaliser shortly after the interval, following a pass from substitute Ademola Lookman, changed the mood. AS reported that it ended his 174-day wait for an Atlético goal and brought him to 50 goals for the club. Those milestones give an already valuable finish an extra significance.

For Atlético supporters, the hope is that this becomes a starting point. A confident Julián makes the attack feel more dangerous, and one decisive action can sometimes do more for a striker than several promising performances.

The Red Card Changed the Task

Hjulmand's dismissal interrupted Atlético's improved second-half spell and left them a player short for the closing stages. From there, protecting the draw became a reasonable priority.

This is where the performance deserves some credit. Playing with ten away from home demands concentration and a willingness to keep working when opportunities to attack become limited. My reading of Atlético's response is positive: the team accepted the circumstances and did enough to leave with a useful point.

With Ten Men, Atlético Held Their Ground

There is a temptation to judge every spell of defending as a sign that something is wrong. In this situation, defending well was precisely what the match required. Atlético had a result worth protecting, and seeing it through carried its own value.

From a supporter’s perspective, that matters. You want quality on the ball, but you also want to trust the team when a match becomes uncomfortable. Leaving Stuttgart unbeaten after going behind and then losing a player offers some reassurance on that front.

A Point Worth Taking Seriously

This draw should not remove the demand for better football. Atlético need more consistency across the full match, particularly when dealing with an aggressive start from the opposition. The first half remains part of the assessment.

But the overall verdict can still be cautiously positive. Atlético recovered, their striker found the net, and the team held its ground with ten men. There is enough here to take encouragement from the result while expecting a more complete performance next time.
